William Durante, PhD, FAHAProfessor of Medical Pharmacology and PhysiologyUniversity of Missouri - ColumbiaPhD, University of Toronto |
Canadian born, Dr. Durante received his M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario. During his graduate studies, he investigated the cardiovascular effects of diabetes using intact animal and isolated organ approaches. In 1989, he began his postdoctoral fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. During this time, he received training in cellular and molecular biology. He characterized the release of nitric oxide from vascular tissues and cells and later the effects of another physiologically relevant signaling gas, carbon monoxide. In 2001, Dr. Durante was promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology section, where he was a faculty member of Baylor's Graduate Program in Cardiovascular Sciences. In January of 2006, Dr. Durante relocated to the University of Missouri - Columbia where he currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Medical Physiology and Physiology. Dr. Durante has received numerous grants from several agencies and foundations, including the National Institutes of Health, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the American Heart Association--Texas Affiliate, and the national American Heart Association. Dr. Durante was awarded an Established Investigatorship from the American Heart Association in 2001 and was named a Fellow of the American Heart Association. Dr. Durante's important collaborations with Drs. Robert and Fruzsina Johnson began in 2000 and have produced multi-level integrative studies on the role of gaseous monoxides in various cardiovascular disorders. |
